The Department of Transportation Services and the Office of Sustainability brought the blender bike to the October 5th Farmer’s Market.
Students, staff, and faculty pedaled on the blender bike to prepare pumpkin spice smoothies while they learned about Bike Safety Month. Find out more about bicycle safety tips here. SustainableUMD Ambassadors shared information about the Green Terp program and encouraged students to experience making a smoothie without electricity. Farmers Market Manager, Larry Tumlin, provided extra fruit for the bicycle-powered smoothies and regularly hosts cooking demonstrations to highlight how UMD community members can easily incorporate eating seasonally into their diets. Check out the Farmers Market on Wednesdays for the remainder of the spring semester.
“The smoothie bike was a perfect interactive demonstration of how each student has the power to make sustainable change in their own lives, highlighting sustainable transportation, sustainable food choices, and alternative energy sources all in one,” said Miya Johnston ’24, an Public Health Sciences Major with a Minor in Sustainability Studies and Outreach Events intern with the Office of Sustainability. “Plus, it was able to do so in a way that was fun and delicious!”
