Celebrating Henson Week

The Office of Sustainability's Henson Week Celebration

Home Celebrating Stories Celebrating Henson Week

On September 23rd, the Office of Sustainability took part in UMD’s Annual Celebration of Jim and Jane Henson! With this week-long celebration of what would have been Jim’s 90th birthday, there have been a plethora of events from a variety of departments around campus with the theme “Create. Make. Play.”

While Jim Henson is most notably recognized for the creation of the Muppets and Kermit the Frog, he actually integrated many environmental themes into his work. He created an Earth Day Special Feature to promote human action for combating the ecological crisis.

Because the Hensons led such an example for fostering creativity through art and entertainment, the Office of Sustainability decided to host a button-making activity! Students were able to use pre-made designs or create their own to have pressed onto a pin. We aim to educate the UMD community about sustainability, while also providing a creative, artistic outlet.

Catch us at the Farmer’s Market every other Wednesday on Tawes Plaza for more interactive activities!
