April marks Earth Month, and to celebrate, the SGA’s Sustainability Committee and the Residence Hall Association host the annual EarthFest celebration. This year, EarthFest was held on Thursday, April 17th at McKeldin Mall from 11 am to 3 pm. The event featured a bouncy house, insect zoo, and 15 student organizations and departments tabling.
As part of the celebration, the Office of Sustainability (OS) launched a survey to gauge sustainability involvement and engagement among students at UMD. To encourage participation, students who completed the survey received a free succulent. The survey had over 500 responses and will be used to inform sustainability outreach to improve future events and to reach all demographics of students.
The Office of Sustainability also showcased the Outreach Bike, an electric-assisted bike, during EarthFest. OS informed students about renewable energy through demonstrations using solar-powered toy cars, including a miniature car and plane. In addition, UMD’s renewable energy was highlighted through informational graphics about Sustainable Energy Resources.
