Students Engage at Open Shop

The SustainableUMD Network hosted a free Open Shop event on March 8, 2023. Students connected with the Terp to Terp Campus ReUse Storethe Campus Pantry, and the Office of Sustainability's new Outreach Bike.

Literacy activities allowed students to explore the relationship between consumerism and sustainability. At Terp to Terp, students shopped for free secondhand clothing while the Campus Pantry taught students about food labels and expiration dates. The Office of Sustainability hosted the first Outreach Bike event--through the Green Terp program--and provided a fun trivia display with questions about fashion and food waste.

“The event was filled with excitement--students were amazed at the quality of donated clothes,” said Shannon Garrett ’24, an Environmental Science and Policy (ENSP) major and Residential Engagement intern with Residence Life and the Office of Sustainability. “It was wonderful to experience the collaboration between three sustainable programs on campus (Green Terp, the Campus Pantry, and Terp to Terp) for the first time.”
